Denver Parent Transition Training a Success!

The fourth annual Denver Parent Transition Training, held on March 6, attracted one of the largest audiences since its inception in 2006. With the generous donation of the entire Tivoli Conference Center and the Turnhall reception area from Metro State, the conference was able to accommodate more guests and volunteers than previous years. The event featured sessions by Project EYE to EYE, a national nonprofit mentoring program for children with learning disabilities.

Audience members began their day with an empowering keynote address by Executive Director and Cofounder of Project EYE to EYE, David Flink. David touched on his own experiences as a student with a disability and how that allowed him to bring about change for himself and others. Following the address, parents and students could choose from a variety of sessions on self-advocacy, entrepreneurship, sexuality and disability, post secondary options, housing and many more.

At lunch, participants listened to a youth poet and a panel led by Denver Public School students. The rest of the afternoon included more educational sessions and a resource fair with over 40 agencies and businesses. Staff from Denver Options’ Family Support Services program and Colorado Solutions program participated in the fair and provided information about services and resources, including Colorado Solutions’ Life Essentials program. Both parents and students left the event with a variety of information to help them prepare for the transition out of high school.
