Max Stays Active with Host Home Living
Max Plucknett loves sports, and his family and host home providers make sure he gets to enjoy his favorite teams’ games as often as possible. His mom, Evelyn, thinks his sports passion started when he went down to the Air Force Academy for a three-day Special Olympics gathering. “He goes to Rockies and Air Force games whenever he can and watches the Broncos and Nuggets on TV. He also picks up radio broadcasts of his favorite games,” said Max’s dad, Duane.
Given Max’s passion, it’s not surprising that the Broncos’ and the Colorado Rockies’ team logos appeared on his 54th birthday cake. His parents and his sister, Carla, all came to his home to help him celebrate. Two huge balloons in the shape of a five and a four left no doubt about which birthday he was celebrating. Max’s host home providers, Laura and James, created a beautiful buffet of his favorite foods.
Evelyn noted that Max is very social and enjoys living in a host home setting. “Max likes to stay involved. He visits our home every other weekend, but he’s always ready to get back to his house when Sunday arrives,” she explained. “He uses a talking board to communicate with people, and he tells you what he wants.” Duane added that Max has a strong relationship with his host home providers. “Max gets along well with Laura and James because they listen to him. They often create choices he can easily respond to through his talking board. They respect Max, and he’s now connected to their extended family and friends,” Duane said.
Evelyn and Duane also appreciate the relationship they have with Colorado Solutions, a program of Denver Options. “We have a good information exchange with Colorado Solutions,” Duane stated. “We can call Carol Black, Max’s residential specialist, whenever we have a question about something. Carol heard Max was a sports buff, so she asked him a baseball stats question the day they met. Max typed the answer on his communication device, and they bonded,” Duane noted with a smile.
Travel is also high on Max’s list of favorite things. He and his parents have traveled to Estes Park, and he attends the Easter Seals’ travel camp each year, where he spends five days visiting various Colorado locations. “Colorado Solutions does a great job of getting all the needed paperwork together to help Max go where he wants to go. That’s often a lot of information to gather, and we appreciate their attention to all those details,” Duane said. “We rely on Colorado Solutions to keep Max safe, active and happy.”
